The University of California, Irvine is currently accepting applications for an assistant director position to assist the management and operation of the Center for Complex and Active Materials (CCAM), a new Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MSREC) recently funded by the National Science Foundation. The UCI MRSEC builds on UCI’s strengths in multidisciplinary science and engineering research, experiential learning, world-class facilities, and commitment to diversity. The Center aims to (1) create complex hard materials with the ability to withstand extreme environments for applications in national defense, and (2) design dynamically responsive soft materials that may mimic real biological processes and serve as an interface with living systems for healthcare applications. The Assistant Director will perform professional and administrative duties to support the day-to-day operation of the UCI MRSEC; assist in planning and implementing activities for research, education, outreach, and collaborations with national labs and industries; track the progress of research and education activies toward the Center’s goals, assist in communication of research highlights, organize and prepare the annual progress report for NSF; interpret, monitor and analyze information regarding operating policies and procedures; process expenditures and monitor budgets; coordinate academic and/or staff personnel matters; and oversee routine activities and resolve problems of the Center. The Gupta lab focuses on inflammatory and nociceptive mechanisms underlying acute and chronic pain.

Primary Responsibilities:
The UCI Division of Hematology/Oncology has an opportunity for a postdoctoral position within the laboratory of Kalpna Gupta to work on projects related to the pathobiology of pain, neuroinflammation and vascular dysfunction. A major focus of this position will be to utilize various imaging modalities to identify and quantify variations in inflammatory, vascular and neuronal activation in vitro and an established mouse model of sickle cell disease. This will be accomplished using a variety of technologies including confocal microscopy imaging, live calcium imaging, mast cell and neuronal cell culture, cell and molecular biology and analysis with ELISA. This position will involve method development, data analysis and preparing the data for presentation and publication.

The Ferdowsi Presidential Chair is an endowed chair established for the purpose of teaching courses in religious studies, and creating a locus of Zoroastrian and Ancient Iranian studies at the University of California, Irvine. The Yokomori Laboratory in Biological Chemistry is looking for a motivated individual with science and mathematical skills to participate in cutting edge genome-wide 3D chromatin interaction analyses. Responsibilities in the lab include: 1) taking care of administrative matters, including placing orders for purchasing, keeping records of hazardous materials and lab safety manuals, 2) working collaboratively with work-study students to preparing buffer solutions and maintain basic lab functions, and 3) participating in the ongoing research projects in the Yokomori laboratory.

Job description: Specialist research position opening in the area of novel DNA-based near-infrared optical materials. Our research group investigates photonic nanomaterials scaffolded by biological and synthetic polymers, including methods to predictively design these materials and study of their resulting photophysical properties. This research is at the intersection of soft materials physics, chemistry, and nanoscience.

This position is open for Specialists at all ranks—Junior, Assistant, Associate, Full rank determined based on experience.

This individual would specifically work on the development of high-throughput optical characterization of near-infrared-emissive DNA-stabilized silver clusters, to enable design and discovery of new silver clusters by machine learning. Tasks would include (1) adapting a well plate reader with a near-infrared-sensitive detector and appropriate optical filters, (2) building the electronics to convert measured signal to suitable signal for digitization by analog-to-digital converters, (3) writing acquisition software to collect and normalize sample fluorescence spectra, and (4) optimizing hardware.

Experience with electronics and fluorescence spectroscopy is required. In addition, experience with wet lab chemistry, DNA-based nanomaterials, and programming are desired. Selection will place emphasis on expertise, experience and previous publication record. This is a great opportunity to pursue highly interdisciplinary science and have an opportunity to interact with PIs and researchers with diverse scientific backgrounds.

Description

The University of California Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine invites applications from MD or PhD board-certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) in Molecular and Cytogenetics to serve as the Associate director of the Molecular Diagnostics and Cytogenetics laboratory. The full-time academic appointment may be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Health Sciences Clinical or Clinical X series, depending on experience and extent of research effort. Clinical X appointments confer membership in the UCI Academic Senate.

As Associate Director of the Molecular Diagnostics and Cytogenetics laboratory, the successful recruit will have the administrative and interpersonal skills to effectively lead and coordinate clinical, teaching, and research activities within and beyond the division. Dedication to teaching and mentoring, which will involve medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows, is required. Candidates should have at least one year of experience working independently in a clinical laboratory signing out both cytogenetics and molecular cancer testing. Clinical licensure in the State of California in Molecular and Cytogenetics and board certification by ABMGG are required.

The successful recruit will also have the skills to carry out Molecular Pathology-related research as a thought leader or collaborative team member.
