Anticipated Start Date: 11/1/2020
Anticipated position duration: 100% (or negotiable)

Job description: Specialist research position opening in the area of novel DNA-based near-infrared optical materials. Our research group investigates photonic nanomaterials scaffolded by biological and synthetic polymers, including methods to predictively design these materials and study of their resulting photophysical properties. This research is at the intersection of soft materials physics, chemistry, and nanoscience.

This position is open for Specialists at all ranks—Junior, Assistant, Associate, Full rank determined based on experience.

This individual would specifically work on the development of high-throughput optical characterization of near-infrared-emissive DNA-stabilized silver clusters, to enable design and discovery of new silver clusters by machine learning. Tasks would include (1) adapting a well plate reader with a near-infrared-sensitive detector and appropriate optical filters, (2) building the electronics to convert measured signal to suitable signal for digitization by analog-to-digital converters, (3) writing acquisition software to collect and normalize sample fluorescence spectra, and (4) optimizing hardware.

Experience with electronics and fluorescence spectroscopy is required. In addition, experience with wet lab chemistry, DNA-based nanomaterials, and programming are desired. Selection will place emphasis on expertise, experience and previous publication record. This is a great opportunity to pursue highly interdisciplinary science and have an opportunity to interact with PIs and researchers with diverse scientific backgrounds.

Interested applicants should send a detailed CV, along with a list of publications, and at least one letter of recommendation, preferably via email, to Prof. Stacy Copp (stacy.copp@uci.edu), Engineering Tower 636, Irvine, CA 92697. In the cover letter, delineate specifically how your skills can be applied to the work in this lab.
