The positions contribute to a NASA-funded project within the ‘Space Weather with Quantified Uncertainty’ program. The main objective will be to deliver probabilistic space weather forecasts with their associated uncertainties. In particular, the two positions will focus on the forecast of solar wind quantities (speed and magnetic field) and of ground magnetic field (possibly geomagnetic indexes). The position will involve close collaboration with other post-docs, students, and senior members of the project, which are divided between CIRES, the Computer Science Department and the Space Weather Technology, Research, and Education Center (SWx-TREC) at CU Boulder, and the space physics group at the University of California, Los Angeles. The position will be primarily based at CU Boulder, although remote working can be considered.

  • Develop a suite of machine learning models for application to the forecasting of specific space weather phenomena and relevant parameters (i.e. solar wind or ground magnetic field).

  • Calibrate those models for meaningful probabilistic predictions.

  • Validate the models, including comparison against physics-based models.

  • Actively participate in other research activities within the project, possibly co-supervising students.

  • Publish articles in international scientific journals and present results at scientific conferences.

The positions provide direct clinical services and campus community outreach to the general student population. This is a phenomenal opportunity to gain skills in triage and crisis management for someone who would like to pursue a career in university counseling center administration. In this position, you would provide 4 hours of non-urgent brief screening/triage and 4 hours of same-day crisis/triage sessions each week, in addition to post hospital case management sessions, Intensive DBT group co-facilitation, and maintaining a general caseload. This position works closely with the Crisis/Triage Team Manager in learning about clinical systems and the development of clinical programs.
Our second position focuses on working with diverse populations. This Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion track position provides direct clinical services to diverse student populations. In addition to therapeutic services, this position provides opportunities to develop unique outreach programming to reach underserved groups on the CU Boulder campus. The Prevention Science Specialist will provide a system of support, including training and technical assistance, to approximately 40 community partners in Colorado funded by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to implement the Communities That Care (CTC) model. CTC is a prevention science model that supports local community coalitions to make equitable decisions that reduce risk, promote protection, and address inequities in their community that supply to youth violence, substance use, and mental health. Future rounds of funding will include the implementation of evidence-based local policy and systems change strategies that promote protective factors. CDPHE contracted CSPV to own the statewide evaluation efforts of this shared approach in Colorado and provide communities training on using data for decision-making, integrating evaluation, and monitoring into local quality improvement efforts, advancing equitable approaches.

What You Should Know

  • Take lead in the development of Quantum Forge, a hands-on, problem solving training experience to introduce advanced undergraduates to methods and tools of experimental quantum science and engineering.

  • Establish and manage a Research Exchange Marketplace, to expand the traditional student base in QIST by matching students from community colleges and minority-serving institutions with internship opportunities in our partner universities, National labs, and in industry.

  • Guide and develop Quantum Engineering Educational Modules, and work with faculty from regional community colleges at multi-day summer workshops hosted by Q-SEnSE to create and adapt existing quantum education modules to meet different institutional contexts and needs.

  • Coordinate with an interdisciplinary Graduate Training program at the University of New Mexico, a Ph.D. concentration for students to earn degrees in a home department (Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, etc.) with a concentration in QIST.
