The Colorado School of Public Health, University of ColoradoSchool of Medicine, and the University of Colorado Cancer Center (ColoradoSPH)invite applications from distinguished investigators for a senior-level facultyposition in the ColoradoSPH or School of Medicine, as appropriate, and asenior-level leadership position in the Cancer Center to lead cancer populationsciences research. This appointment is accompanied by an Endowed Chair andsignificant financial resources to stimulate and sustain a robust program ofresearch in Cancer Population Sciences.


Natureof Work

The AssociateDirector (AD) for Population Sciences is expected to lead the development of a nationally-recognizedinnovative research portfolio that addresses the full spectrum of cancer populationscience. The AD will oversee the Cancer Prevention and Control Program and the developmentof new programs as appropriate. The AD will provide leadership and directionfor all scientific, policy, and programmatic issues relating to Population Sciences.

The School ofPublic Health is a collaborative endeavor involving the University of ColoradoDenver (CU Denver), Colorado State University (CSU), and the University ofNorthern Colorado (UNC). The Colorado School of Public Health is the first andonly accredited school of public health in the Rocky Mountain Region, attractingtop tier faculty and students from across the country, and providing a vital contributiontowards ensuring our region’s health and wellbeing. Collaboratively formed in2008 by the University of Colorado Denver, CSU and UNC, the Colorado School ofPublic Health provides training, innovative research and community service toactively address public health issues including chronic disease, access tohealthcare, environmental threats, emerging infectious diseases, and costlyinjuries.

TheUniversity of Colorado is an NCI-designated Consortium Comprehensive CancerCenter with approximately 300 members engaged in collaborative cancer researchat the University of Colorado, Colorado State University, University of Coloradoat Boulder, the Veterans Administration, and associated medical centers.Members conduct research in epidemiology, chemoprevention, genetics,survivorship, health services, and behavioral science. To further thescientific excellence of the program, we are seeking an Associate Professor or Professorin the tenure track with expertise in one or more of the areas listed above.The person in this position will provide leadership and direction for allscientific, policy, and programmatic issues relating to the program and workcollaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary group to expand the cancerprevention and control program.

Candidates should have an established background in cancerprevention and control research. Depending on the qualifications of candidates,faculty appointments will be considered by the following units: Department of Epidemiology,Department of Community and Behavioral Health, Department of Health Systems,Management, and Policy, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, Departmentof Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, and/or a department in the School ofMedicine.

This position will report to the Chair of the appointingdepartment under the primary appointment, and to the Deputy Director of the Universityof Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Examplesof Work Performed


  • Develop funding proposals to support research.

  • Conduct funded research consistent with the goals of theCancer Population Sciences.

  • Develop new programs under the Population Sciences umbrella.

  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Mentor junior faculty as well as Master’s and Doctoralstudents.

  • Classroom teaching in areas matching interests and departmentalneeds.

  • Engage with diverse professional colleagues working across thespectrum of cancer research.

  • Review annual progress reports for the Cancer Prevention andControl Program.

  • Write and review components of the CCSG application.

  • Provide leadership and direction for all scientific, policy,and programmatic issues relating to Population Science within the Cancer Center.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Experience in conducting cancer population science research,research on the development, implementation, and evaluation of cancerprevention and control programs and/or policies (including approaches fromepidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, psychology, economics, politicalscience, or health services research).

  • Knowledge of research methods suitable for cancer populationscience.

  • Experience in developing and managing research grants.

  • Team orientation and skills for interdisciplinarycollaboration.

  • Experience teaching graduate students and/or residents and/orfellows.

Qualifications

RequiredQualifications


  • A doctoral degree in public health or a closely related fieldor a medical degree with additional training in public health.

  • Strong track record of peer-reviewed funding and publishedresearch in the peer-reviewed literature.

  • Evidence of a national and/or international reputation in cancer-focusedresearch.

  • Cancer-focused research publications.

  • Evidence of success in teaching and mentorship of students,fellows, or other trainees, and evidence of leadership and service to scientificand professional organizations.

PreferredQualifications


  • 4-5 years post-doctoral experience in cancer populationsciences research.

  • Experience in programmatic leadership.

  • Experience as a member and leader in a National CancerInstitute-designated cancer center program, shared resource, or other sponsoredactivity.
