The University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry has just welcomed their new Department Chair, C. Neill Epperson, MD and is in the process of growing the Department of Psychiatry with new programs and expanding existing programs.
Job Summary:Revenue Cycle Specialist is responsible for all aspects of Behavioral Health billing and coding in the areas of Psychology/Psychiatry direct patient care, Addiction Medicine, Tele-Behavioral Health and Integrated (embedded) Behavioral Health. This position will also work with the Finance Team to disseminate quarterly productivity reports to individual providers with their faculty and administrative leadership.
Examples of Work Performed:
- Responsible for all aspects of Behavioral Health billing and coding in the areas of Psychology/Psychiatry direct patient care, Addiction Medicine, Tele-Behavioral Health and Integrated (embedded) Behavioral Health.
- Create billing and coding training materials for providers and trainees and perform education as needed.
- Review documentation on a regular basis and communicate opportunities for improved documentation, templates, and correct coding to individual providers.
- Work with the Finance Team to disseminate quarterly productivity reports to individual providers with their faculty and administrative leadership. Identify opportunities for improvement or exemplars to be used in training.
- Work closely with program leadership in each Division to improve reporting and operations in clinics to address revenue cycle opportunities. Work with University Hospital and Children’s Hospital leadership to ensure correct facility billing and to develop appropriate reporting methods.
- Interface with CU Med Liaisons, ACE, and A/R departments for documentation, training for new Behavioral Health providers and pursuing new billing/reimbursement trends.
- Respond to inquiries from insurance carriers, via telephone, email or fax and demonstrate a high level of customer service.
- Train clinical staff regarding insurance verification needs and communication with patients about insurance and payment issues.
- Work closely with CU Medicine to ensure that claims are reimbursed appropriately and that correct codes and licensures are listed in the contracts. Work with CU Medicine A/R to ensure charge corrections, if needed.
- Identify and respond to patterns of denials or billing practices and perform complex account investigation as needed to achieve resolution.
- Work with CU Medicine to appeal carrier denials through review of coding, contracts, and medical records.
- Train staff to verify patient benefit eligibility/coverage and research ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT treatment codes as needed.
- Advise management of any trends regarding insurance denials in an effort to identify problems with particular payers.
- Complete required reports and assist with special projects as assigned.
- Be familiar with Behavioral Health carve out plans, benefits, copays, H&B coding, and regulatory issues involving Behavioral Telehealth and Telepsychiatry.
Salary and Benefits:Salary is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in business, business administration, finance, accounting, education, social sciences, healthcare administration, public administration, communications, information systems, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
- Two (2) years of professional level experience in a large medical group medical/behavioral health billing environment.
Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis, but not for the specific 2 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in an integrated healthcare setting, preferably Behavioral Health focused.
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification preferred. CPC required within 1 year of employment.
- Experience with electronic medical records or billing / financial systems. (EPIC)
- Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10 and DSM-5
- Experience creating training materials, providing feedback and education, and presentation skills are highly desired.
- Experience in collections and negotiation is highly preferred.
