TheClinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is a Registered Nurse with a Master'sdegree in Nursing from a university with a specialized CNL program.The competencies unique to CNL practice are clinical leadership,care environment management, and clinical outcomes management. TheCNL enacts these competencies at the clinical microsystem definedas functional front-line unit that such as hospital unit,outpatient clinic, or home health setting, or unit level toinfluence care delivery processes and dynamics. The CNL works withhealthcare team members and leaders to coordinate care, manageresources, and compile and evaluate data with a focus on quality,patient safety, and outcomes. The CNL role was developed toseamlessly align with WellStar's Nursing Professional PracticeModel, and is based in part on the American Association of Collegesof Nursing's Competencies and Curricular Expectations for ClinicalNurse Leader Education and Practice (2013), and an empiricallyvalidated conceptual model for CNL practice (Bender et al. 2016).The CNL partners with patients, staff and providers. The CNLcollaborates with nursing leadership to focus on the patient, atthe point of care as a subject matter expert. To support thiseffort, he/she must maintain clinical knowledge. It is expectedCNLs are RNs, CNL certified, clinically knowledgeable, uphold thepractice of nursing as outlined by the Georgia Professional NursePractice Act, and implement the Scope of Practice and Code ofEthics Standards put forth by the American Nurses Association. As amember of the healthcare team, it is expected the CNL upholds thevoice of the patient and WellStar's policies and procedures whilesupporting service excellence goals. Qualifications RequiredMinimum Education: Masters in Nursing (MSN) or Masters of Sciencein Nursing (MS) from an accredited school or university that has aCNL program recognized by the American Colleges of Nursing.Required Minimum Licensure/Certification: Must be a RegisteredNurse actively licensed in the state of Georgia. Must have acurrent BLS card from the American Heart Association on the firstday of employment in position or complete prior the end oforientation. In certain work units, ACLS certification may berequired and will be determined at the unit level. Must havecertification as a Clinical Nurse Leader from the Commission ofNurse Certification. Required Minimum Experience: Two to four yearsof acute care nursing for similar patient population. Progressiveexperience in health care including involvement in direct patientcare, educating staff, and problem solving of unit ororganizational issues. Required Minimum Skills: Ability to identifyimprovement in clinical operations and implement change andwillingness to challenge established ways of doing things in aconstructive way. Ability to lead, mentor and develop staff.Exemplifies a strong, positive attitude toward internal andexternal customers and continuous service improvement. Excellentconflict resolution skills. Has well developed diplomatic, tact andlistening skills. Adept at using technology as a tool to supportreal-time education at the point of care. Uses quality improvementmethodologies to evaluate failures and patient safety practices atthe microsystem level. Skilled at delegation, oversight andevaluation of care given.
