The University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has an exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Determines the optical characteristics of spectacle lenses with the lensometer or autolensometer

  • Performs the following test procedures on patients of all ages, including children and the elderly:

    • Confrontation fields

    • Goldmann visual fields

    • Humphrey visual fields

    • Amsler grid

    • Insertion and removal of hard and soft contact lenses

    • Administration of eye drops

    • Keratometry: standard and auto

    • Auto refraction

    • Specialized visual fields performed for the ocular studies

    • Tonometry: Goldmann and tonopen



  • Measures the visual acuity, at distance and near with the:

    • Projector chart

    • E-card

    • Hand motion techniques, including directionality

    • Light perception with and without projection

    • Pinhole visual acuity

    • Near point card



  • Monitors and maintains the levels of minor equipment

  • Educates patients on testing procedure

  • Performs vital signs on patients having laser procedures or when directed by the Physician

  • Monitors the progress and facilitates the testing of patients undergoing diagnostic testing and/or consultations in other areas/departments

  • Performs other duties as assigned
